Play Dough Recipe

In a 1 quart or sandwich zip-top bag combine:

  • 1/2 Cup Flour
  • 1/4 to 1/3 Cup Salt
  • 1 or 2 tsp Cream of Tartar

Get a bit of air in there, seal up the bag and mix completely.

Then add the liquid team:

  • 1/2 Cup Water
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp cooking oil
  • 5-10 Drops food coloring

Keep the air in the bag, mix inside the bag until a nice sticky dough forms. Let the air out of the bag, lay it flat on its side and microwave for 60 seconds.

The dough will be extremely hot, be careful. Let it cool for 15 mins then knead well. You may microwave other color batches while you wait.

Did you wait long enough? The dough really holds heat, flatten it out and be patient, don't burn yourself.

If you see any light or wet spots, flatten the dough, return it to the bag, and cook for another 30 seconds. Then cool for 10 mins and knead it again.

Makes about 1 tub of Play Dough. Store in an airtight container. I recommend making 1 bag per participant. Color each batch differently. It starts out a little bit greasy, but ages nicely when played with for a half hour or so.

It will dry out if left out, stores nicely in recycled Playdoh cans.
